D2R Mobile Builds: What Changes on a Phone — Skill Cap 40, Farming & Touch-Friendly Play

Quick Answer

Your builds still work
The port runs the original game — every class, skill and breakpoint behaves as it always has. Mobile play invalidates nothing.
What does change
Two systems: the Greater Rift raises the skill cap from 20 to 40, and Elysium's drop rates rewrite what farming builds optimize for. Plus: your inputs change.
This page's job
A framework, not a skill-point table. We cover what mobile play changes and leave the classic build catalogs to the sites that maintain them.

First: What Still Works

Start with the reassurance: D2R Mobile runs the original program. Hammerdins, Blizzard sorceresses, Javazons, Fishymancers — every classic build plays by the same rules, the same breakpoints, the same item math. A phone does not change the game; it changes you — your inputs, your screen, your session length.

So the build guides you already know apply directly. What those guides cannot tell you is how the port's exclusive systems (Greater Rift, Elysium) and touch controls reshape build choices. That gap is this page.

The One Numbers Change: Skill Cap 40

The Greater Rift grants +1 Skill Point and +5 Stat Points every two levels cleared, and raises the skill level cap from 20 to 40. In the original game a level-20 cap forces discipline: pick two or three skills, ignore the rest. At 40, that math relaxes.

Editorial judgment — the reward rules are the project's; the build consequences below are our reasoning from those rules.

Farming Builds Under Elysium

Elysium mode multiplies Unique drops ×5, Set ×3, Runes ×5, cuts the no-drop chance to a tenth, and makes bosses always drop at first-kill rates. The consequence for farming builds is decisive:

  1. Kill count beats magic find. When almost every kill rolls loot, clear speed is the stat that matters. A fast clearer with modest MF out-earns a slow MF stack.
  2. AoE coverage becomes the primary axis. Screen-clearing skills turn Elysium's generosity into volume. Single-target specialists still shine where it counts — the mode gives every boss first-kill tables on every run.
  3. Mobility stays king. Teleport-class movement compounds with kill-count logic: more ground, more kills, more rolls.

Touch vs Controller: Which Playstyles Feel Right

This part no desktop guide covers. The same build feels different across the port's two input schemes — and a few archetypes genuinely prefer one. Our read, by archetype:

Playstyle archetypeOn touchOn controllerOur take
Pet / summoner classesComfortable — position while the army worksComfortableEither; auto-recast maintains your buffs for you
Screen-wide AoE castersGood — drag-to-aim handles big targets fineGood — stick aiming is preciseEither; Elysium's best farming profile
Teleport-reliant castersGood — auto-pathing and tap-to-move cover the gapsVery goodController slightly ahead on long sessions
Precision melee duelistsPlayable — auto-targeting helps; drag-aim is the weak linkBest fit — a physical stick beats a virtual oneController, especially for Boss Rush upper stages
Many-hotkey buildsTwo skill sets cover common cases; weapon-swap casting is one tapFull console mappingBoth schemes cap out at similar complexity

Two port features flatten this table more than they look: auto-drink (healing below 50% life, rejuvenation below 30%, your mercenary fed by the same rule) and auto-recast for buffs — see the quality-of-life guide. Less defensive busywork means more attention for aiming, which helps touch play disproportionately.

The Mobile Build Checklist

  1. Layer, don't rebuild. Take a known-good build as your base; layer the Rift's 40-cap and Elysium's drop logic on top.
  2. Pick your mode first. Elysium characters are farmers; normal-mode characters follow the classic curve. It is a character-creation decision you cannot undo.
  3. Decide your input before your gear. Mostly touching? Weight builds with generous auto-targeting. A controller in your bag opens up precision melee.
  4. Let the port carry the chores. Auto-drink, auto-recast and the QoL layer replace a chunk of what used to be player attention — spend the savings on positioning.
  5. Watch the Kill Board for the truth. Best and average kill times per boss (Boss Rush & Kill Board) settle build debates faster than forum theory.

Builds FAQ

Do classic D2R build guides apply to D2R Mobile?

Yes, directly — the game underneath is the real game. Skills, breakpoints and items behave identically. Only the port's exclusive systems (the Rift's skill cap, Elysium's drops) and the input shift change any decision.

What is the best build for the Greater Rift?

The rules favor builds that scale with skill points (the 40-cap) and clear fast (the 15-minute timer). Beyond that the mode is new enough that community data — and your own Kill Board numbers — are the honest answer, not a listicle. We will expand this page as patterns emerge.

Is there a build planner built into the port?

Not a skill-tree planner — but the Runeword helper, Chronicle stash and Trove cover the "what can I make right now" half of planning. See our planner guide for the desktop-then-phone workflow.
